Game Summary: Snowblind is a psychological horror game with a few tabletop RPG elements. It focuses on isolation, survival, and existential horror. It's meant to stay small, capped at 100 players, and there's a strong focus on the need for communication and teamwork to make any progress in the confusing snowy landscape. The science fiction, technologically-oriented, dystopian plot has been slowly uncovered by characters working diligently and possibly hurting their sanity for these secrets. The point of the characters' continuing journey through the town is to escape.
How long was your character in Game: A year and a half in real time, about six months in game time.
History of Character in their Game: Sylar arrived in town on Day 144, fresh from the beginning of his canon. He showed up on the same day with Mohinder Suresh, and so had to continue to use his persona of Zane Taylor as he introduced himself to the rest of the town. He was quickly found out by Dr. House, and the very first event hits his strongest fear- that he's entirely alone in the world, and he might not even be real. In a panic to reinstate his identity, he 'accidentally' reveals who he is to Mohinder. In the ensuing fight, he murders the man and hides the evidence.
He then finds himself alone, eager to travel with whoever will allow it, and spends about a week with Alphonse Elric, whom he finds interesting. He then meets up with Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, hopeful that he can be of use in solving the puzzles in this place. But on Night 180, the people trapped in the town are suddenly forced onto one side or the other, and Sylar is on the half of people that keep their mind and are hunted. This night affected him strongly because he saw first-hand the rationalizations people came up with for murder. It made him notice what a difference his mindset was, here in this place where he doesn't have his powers (and, subsequently, doesn't have the 'Hunger'- a compulsion to collect information at all costs).
Because of that night, his true identity gets out to a number of people, but most importantly he confesses to Al and Al promises to help him. Sylar begins to think, in earnest, about trying to be a better person. Unfortunately, that's almost immediately destroyed because he runs into Sherlock at a bad time and ends up threatening him. John punches him a couple times for that, and Sylar realizes both how poor he is at straightforward fights, and also how little self-control he still has. Oddly enough, it's John that keeps him from spiraling out of control and into self-pity. Instead, John points him towards trying to be useful.
Unfortunately, that results with him doing an experiment with Sherlock that was almost certainly going to result in his death. Afterwards, he is forced to tell the truth for several days, which continues to break down his alias as Zane Taylor. He decides to stop traveling with Sherlock and Watson and makes a break for Al instead, someone who made him feel more stable rather than less.
As they're traveling together, another event happens on Day 203. With Al busy mourning the death of his brother, they don't leave when they need to. It results in Sylar getting a hole punched through his leg, rendering him incapable of walking without help. Al helps him get around as they head to the newer areas of the map. On Night 217, people feel a compulsion to share their fears and comfort others, and Sylar is no exception. He speaks about topics he would normally never bring up, talks with Royce and Al in particular, and makes the first tentative decision to try and keep from getting his abilities back, in an effort to remain in control of himself.
On Day 228, he dies. He returns with a canon update where a lot of the fears he talked about on 217 came true. Worried for the safety of Al, who he considers a friend, he plans to avoid Al in the future. Unfortunately, Al doesn't agree and promises to hunt him down if he goes through with it. So he tries to find an alternate solution- a procedure that the Admin of the town can do with the nanomachines to keep him from acting on impulsive thoughts.
He makes more friends of a few select people: Royce Melborn, Stephanie Brown, and Vanitas. And he gets closer to a few others. As he does this, he warns people and tries to set up a more serious defense for the possibility of his abilities coming back. And on Day 260, he is kidnapped and placed in a cell, along with a number of other 'sinners'. All the sinners are put through horrific 'surgeries' and pushed to 'convert' through the next several days, their minds slowly fading from them over time. The experience pulls up an old memory he had repressed, of his father killing his mother and leaving him.
Both the torture and the memory cause him to turn inward and focus on his own identity. He also clings to Al and Steph like a lifeline, especially after a discussion about a personalized item left for Sylar gets him to think harder about what he was doing and why. Sylar starts thinking of himself as Gabriel again, becoming entirely serious about trying to be a better person.
Since then, he's been eager to prove himself and traveling with Steph and Al (and sometimes Vanitas) to try and help people, as well as solve the mystery here. He brought up a book exchange with new friend Flynn, as well as set up a Skills Database on Day 282. He tried his best to help make progress, although they were stuck.
But the more Gabriel tries to do 'Good', the more the cracks start to show. Mycroft Holmes tries to hire him for an assassination. Alternate timelines invade their heads for a few days and he has to reconcile the many times he remembers being violent with trying not to be. The arrival of Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter puts him back on guard when dealing with people.
So when he finally leaves Steph and Al on Day 327 to go and try to help his friends Royce and Alfie, he's more vulnerable than he thinks he is. People disappear on Day 330 and Al ends up dying after being locked outside. Frantic at being left alone, Gabriel panics and destroys things. His faith in his progress and stability is heavily shaken.
How did they change from their canon personality wise (Please explain what caused it to happen?) Gabriel has actually followed his canon character arc more closely than I expected. He has, however, had more opportunity to 'prove' his commitment to being a less destructive, more in-control person, and he's had less pressure to fall apart, thanks to Al's support. This means that he's currently more stable in some areas than he is at the end of the series: he's more confident in his ability to make friends and not murder them, he's more likely to show his true personality, and he's less likely to read betrayal into everything.
Unfortunately, since Norfinbury is very focused on breaking down a person's sense of self, he is less likely to trust his own judgment than he would've been at the end of his series. He has no experience of trying to truly fight his urge to consume information, so getting his abilities back would be a real worry for him. He also has untreated trauma from his experience as a 'Sinner' on Day 260, as well as his resurfaced memories and the general horribleness of Norfinbury.
How did they change from their canon physically (Please explain what caused it to happen?): He has a heavy, old-looking scar in a horizontal line across his forehead, as well as line scars across his shoulders and where his hips connect to his legs. He got these on Day 260 when his legs, arms and the top of his head were sawed off and replaced with clockwork parts. Somehow, all of that was healed, but scars were left over.
He's also far too skinny, as is normal for someone from Norfinbury. But if he gets his regeneration back, he'll immediately go back to looking healthy.
Powers: The powers he had before Norfinbury repressed them were: intuitive aptitude, telekinesis, rapid cellular regeneration, alchemy, clairsentience, sound manipulation, electric manipulation, and lie detection. You can find more information about those here.
Possessions: As I imagine is true with most Norfinbury transplants, he's coming in with a lot of junk. Notable items are:
-Clothes and a backpack he will probably be burning at his first opportunity
-Toolbelt
-Norfinbury Tablet
-Wayfinder charm, given to him by Vanitas
-105 tablets of 20mg Vicodin, in a bottle prescribed to Gabriel Gray. (in pocket)
-Baseball bat
-Tools: Nearly-dead flashlight, hammer, screwdriver, socket wrench, 2 saw blades, and pliers
-An iron skillet, which used to have a pie in it.
-Pie ingredients: flour, sugar, salt, apples, cinnamon, butter, eggs.
-Mohinder Suresh's watch (mid-grade quality)
-Binoculars
-Magnifying glass
-Plastic bag with ashes in it (they do not appear to be made of wood)
-Star-etched thermos

-Black (rewriteable) SD card
-Constellation blanket
-Reading glasses
